The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai was one of the most highly acclaimed and praised books of 2018, yet its themes are just as relevant in its 1980s setting as they are today.
The novel alternates between Yale Tishman, a Chicago art director in the height of his career and his group of friends enduring the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and Fiona, who thirty years later studies the photography of the AIDS crisis and discovers just how deeply it impacted her own life, especially her relationship with her estranged daughter.
The novel empathetically examines the AIDS epidemic and at its nucleus highlights the trauma of loss, the impacts of art, and the endurance of friendships.
