A Long Petal of the Sea is equal parts historical fiction and offbeat romance, making it wholly entrancing. This epic novel begins in Spain in the 1930s as the Spanish Civil War claims lives, land, and identities.
The tale spans decades and continents following Victor, an army doctor and Roser, a pregnant widow as they flee their beloved home country of Spain in search of safety, success, and some semblance of freedom in Chile.
While the novel directly follows the passions, pursuits, heartbreaks, and terrors that Victor and Roser face, the reader is also aware that this story is for the over two thousand refugees that embarked on the SS Winnipeg, chartered by Pablo Neruda many years ago, yet not that long ago at all.
